The Faculty of Economics in Collaboration with the Writing Center organized the first Essay Writing Competition at Kardan University. The objective was to improve and polish the writing skills of students of Kardan University in general and the students of Faculty of Economics in particular. The curriculum development survey, conducted in Fall-2018, indicated lack of writing skills among the graduates of Kardan University as a major problem. Therefore, the department of Economics planned to organize a semester wise academic writing competition.
Contestants were asked to write an essay of at least 1500 words on the topic of “Afghanistan’s Air Corridors”.
Three different panels marked the essays, each looking at different aspects of the write up. The first panel marked essays based on writing skills, the second panel based on economic accuracy, and the third panel based on presentation skills.
During the first phase of essay-writing competition, a large number of students participated and sent their essays for approval. The essays were marked based on five criteria of flow of thought, originality of contents, grammar, accuracy of contents and style of writing. Top five essays were chosen for the next phase of presentation.
After presentations, top three presenters were chosen as the first, second and third winners of the best essay certificates. It is worth mentioning that the best essay will be published in Kardan University’s student magazine, Ganjina-e-Kardan, as well.
