Webinar on Post COVID-19: Economic Recovery In Afghanistan

The Faculty of Economics at Kardan University organized a webinar on ‘Post COVID-19: Economic Recovery in Afghanistan’ on Sunday, July 19, conducted by Dr. Said Aziz Sadat, the guest speaker, and Sayed Ajan Ahmadzai, Lecturer at Kardan University.

Dr. Sadat, Director General of the Public Credit Registry Department of Da Afghanistan Bank and Mr. Ahmadzai, jointly delivered the much-anticipated webinar with an in-depth analysis of the COVID-19 pandemic, its impact on global economic activities, global employment, international trade, particularly the economy of Afghanistan.

To combat the current crisis, Mr. Sadat proposed the following practical suggestions to the Afghan government:

• The government should start monetization in the short run
• The government must follow expansionary monetary and fiscal policies
• Provide tax relaxation to those businesses struggling for survival
• Provide subsidies to farmers, consumers, and producers to maintain aggregate demand and employment in the economy
• The government should subsidize the agriculture sector of the economy in the medium run
• The government must focus on utilizing the mineral resources in the long run

Webinar on the Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on Banking Industry in Afghanistan

The Faculty of Economics at Kardan University organized a webinar on “The Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on the Banking Industry in Afghanistan” on Monday, July 13, at 9: 00 AM.

Mr. Ahmad Khesrow Khan Zia, President & CEO of Maiwand Bank and Chairman of Afghanistan Banking Association, a seasoned professional in the Afghanistan banking sector, and Mr. Usman Ali, Assistant Professor at Kardan University conducted the webinar for the students of Economics Faculty.

The presenters discussed the role of the banking sector in uplifting economies like Afghanistan and problems in lack of long term loans to banks. They also discussed matters related to assets quality, capital formation, and an increase in operating cost due to COVID-19 across sectors.

Mr. Khesrow encouraged students to take internship opportunities in Maiwand Bank to enrich their practical understanding in the banking sector of Afghanistan and beyond.

Kardan University Organizes the First Virtual Job Fair (2020)

The Office of Career Services at Kardan University organized the first-ever 'Virtual Job Fair 2020' on Sunday, July 12, at 10: 00 AM.

Eight organizations across different sectors attended the job fair 2020 and shared around 50 job opportunities for students and alumni of the University.

Participating employers appreciated the University's efforts for organizing this event where they could find the best talents from the pool of students and alumni. Most of the students connected via Facebook and had the chance to ask questions and seek guidance on how to apply for a vacancy.

Job Readiness Training session was held on the second part of this event from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM, where Mohammad Amin Hakimi, Career Services & Training Manager, provided instructions to students on how to write CV/ Cover and face job interviews.

Virtual Seminar on Unemployment During COVID-19: The Psychology of Job Loss

Following the series of seminars, the Faculty of Economics at Kardan University will organize the fourth virtual seminar on 'Unemployment During COVID-19: The Psychology of Job Loss' on Tuesday, July 28, at 2:00 PM.

Dr. Perfecto G. Aquino, Jr., Professor at Duy Tan University, Vietnam, will conduct the session for the students this faculty. He holds a Ph.D. in Public Administration and Management from Royal and Pontifical University of Santo Tomas, Manila, Philippines.

Economics Faculty students are highly encouraged to participate in this online seminar, benefit from the thoughtful insight of our guest speaker, and share their thoughts and queries about the subject matter with others.

Virtual Job Fair 2020

The Office of Career Services at Kardan University will organize the first-ever Virtual Job Fair in Afghanistan in July 2020. The purpose of this event is to connect Kardan University students and alumni with the job market and provide them with internship and career opportunities.

The University takes every opportunity to help its students and alumni during these challenging times by providing them the chance to get engaged in job fair and similar events that allow them to build networks with renowned national and international organizations.

Similarly, business organizations can utilize this opportunity by promoting their brand image and finding out the talents from the pool or Kardan University students and alumni.

Facebook Live Session on the Fundamentals of Civil Procedures

Kardan University’s LLB Department hosted a Facebook Live session on the fundamentals of civil procedures on Wednesday, June 24, 2020, for the students of the Faculty of Law.

Mr. Mohammad Karim Amirzoy, Director of National Legal Training Center, facilitated the live session and discussed important topics related to civil procedures and their applications in legal matters and court proceedings.

Mr. Amirzoy provided comprehensive answers to the questions of the students and persuaded them to study and work with commitment. Towards the end, participating students thanked the University and the LLB Department Coordinator, Mohibullah Shaghasi, for organizing such practical sessions, which helps them in boosting their practical knowledge of the legal matters.

Virtual Training on VoIP Systems

Kardan University’s CISCO LAB conducted a virtual training on Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) for the students of Computer Science Department starting Jun 13 – June 17, 2020.

The three-days online session was facilitated by Ahmadullah Azizi, Kardan CISCO LAB Officer. It was a mix of theory and practical training session with an emphasis on the VoIP architecture, its components and how the VoIP works.

The main objectives of this training;
• Understanding the VoIP and its components
• Developing practical network Knowledge and skills in a professional environment with an emphasis on a hands-on approach
• Learning to design and select the best topology for the VoIP
• Acquiring the knowledge and skills required to prepare a network having VoIP
• Describing VoIP and its primary purposes

Challenges of COVID-19: From Shutdown to Recovery for Small and Medium Businesses

The Faculty of Economics at Kardan University organized an online seminar on the “Challenges of COVID-19: From Shutdown to Recovery for Small and Medium Businesses” on June 4, 2020, for the students for the faculty.

Mr. Anthony Negbenebor, Professor at Gardner-Webb University, U.S., delivered the much-anticipated seminar. He discussed the impact of Coronavirus on the economy of the U.S. and some other countries and elaborated on the ways of improving economies post-pandemic.

Towards the end, the Professor provided comprehensive answers to questions raised by students about the impact of COVID-19 on the economy of Afghanistan. The students were satisfied with the effectiveness of the seminar and appreciated the efforts of Kardan University for organizing such practical virtual sessions.

Kardan University Becomes the Signatory of PRME and Receives the Membership of SDSN

Kardan University became the signatory to the UN’s Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME), a principle-based global engagement platform for academic institutions, and received the membership of UN’s Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN).

SDSN and PRME are United Nations-supported initiatives established to promote practical problem solving for sustainable development and raising the profile for sustainability in academic institutions around the world.

Kardan University has made sustainability one of its most fundamental priorities driven by research, practice, and strategic partnerships. In 2019, Kardan University published its first impact report highlighting the institution’s socio-economic, cultural, and environmental contributions in Afghanistan.

Amid the COVID-19 challenging times, Kardan University organizes the fifth (40 Under 40 Awards Ceremony), which recognizes exceptional students and alumni of the University through a prestigious event.

The selection committee will select 40 candidates with outstanding performance in the categories of leadership, service, impact, and academics. Research Seminar on Digital Distraction and Academic Performance: Quantification and Mitigation

Kardan University’s Office of Gender and Alumni Relations will organize an online research seminar on “Digital Distraction and Academic Performance: Quantification and Mitigation” on Thursday, May 28, 2020. Students of all programs and alumni can participate in this Facebook live session.

Mr. Farhad Mohammad Afzali, BCS Term A ’10 alumnus, recipient of Kardan University’s prestigious ’40 Under 40 Award’, Ph.D. Candidate and Lecturer at the University of Nebraska Omaha, will deliver the session. He is part of the instructional team teaching Java programming, database management, and statistics courses.

Mr. Afzali has already conducted several types of research on a variety of topics and will provide students with useful insight on methods of conducting a comprehensive research.

Kardan University Organized Online Competition on the Virtues of the Holy Month of Ramadan

Amid the COVID-19 challenging times, Kardan University keeps the spirit of its students high by taking new and exciting initiatives on different fronts. This time, the University’s Departments of BBA and Economics organized an online competition “On the Virtues of the Holy Month of Ramadan” through Zoom Meeting Application.

The objective of this virtual seminar was to highlight the importance of the Holy Month of Ramadan, one of the five pillars of Islam, and to help students understand the spiritual and moral values of Ramadan.

It also provided students a chance to expand their understanding of Islamic studies using virtual methods of teaching and learning. The competition was conducted by renowned religious scholars and faculty deans, where Engineering and BBA students appeared the winners of the competition, respectively.

Fall 2019 Terminal Makeup Exam

Kardan University understands the challenges that our students are facing during the COVID-19 outbreak. We recognize the hard work and commitment of our students who embrace the many constraints, and continue their studies online. We strongly believe in your progression and are looking to support you in the best possible way under any circumstances.

The terminal make up exam was scheduled for March 28, 2020 and due to Kabul lockdown, we could not proceed accordingly. Subsequently, the Academic Council of the University decided to conduct online makeup exam for its bachelor and master programs (Fall 2019 Batch) on May 2, 2020. Meanwhile, due to the prevailing COVID-19 situation and the economic challenges, students are exempted from exam charges and are encouraged to register for the makeup exam through “My Kardan” Student Portal before May 1, 2020.

Kardan University Chancellor holds a virtual meeting with the University staff and faculty

Kardan University's Chancellor, Mr. Roeen Rahmani, spoke to faculty and staff on Saturday, April 11, 2020, highlighting the University's response to COVID-19 pandemic and future direction. During the meeting, Mr. Rahmani expressed his appreciation of the faculty and staff who have demonstrated their unwavering commitment towards ensuring academic continuity and the provision of exceptional services to our students.

He praised the Kardanians for being ever committed, solution-oriented, optimistic, and trailblazers who have given hope to the people of Afghanistan since its humble beginnings in 2002. "Enabling the online education system within a matter of few days and shifting the entire teaching and learning processes online is an extremely challenging task in Afghanistan. I am grateful for your dedication towards fulfilling our promise of excellence to thousands of our students and other key stakeholders," Mr. Rahmani said.

He also underscored the University leadership's commitment to ensuring that our people are protected and supported during this challenging situation.

The Chancellor announced the launch of the "Kardan Welfare Fund" to support our faculty and staff who might be negatively impacted as a result of staffing changes and the pandemic.

While congratulating the faculty and staff on achieving the MBA accreditation and application to the Times Higher Education Impact Ranking, he concluded the meeting with a call for a steadfast belief that Kardan University will emerge stronger and ever more impactful once we have overcome the COVID-19 together.

The university management recently contacted students from different bachelor and master programs about their experience of the Online Education System. The students expressed their approval of the system as the best possible solution in the current COVID-19 situation and thanked Kardan University for arranging the online classes in a very short period of time, and enabling them to continue their studies while staying at home.

Kardan University announces 60 Million Afghanis as financial assistance package for all those students who are facing difficulties in during the COVID-19 pandemic. The amount will be disbursed as per the following details:

Recipients of Fall 2019 Financial Assistance

Those who have received financial assistance for the Fall 2019 session, the assistance will continue automatically in Spring 2020. If they have already submitted an application or not, these changes will be reflected in their student accounts. No application or follow up is necessary.

Recipients of Merit Scholarships for Fall 2019

Merit scholarships are offered to those students who have achieved the highest grades in their undergraduate and graduate studies. For this semester, Kardan University will review the student academic records and award merit scholarship to the top scorers who are full-time, have no disciplinary issues, and have met the attendance and other scholarship requirements. These changes will be reflected in their student accounts. No application or follow up is necessary.

COVID-19 Special Financial Assistance Package - Spring 2020

Considering the COVID-19 socio-economic challenges our students are facing, Kardan University is proud to provide special financial assistance packages to all our student community so that they could pursue higher education amid these challenging times. All undergraduate and graduate students, who pay their tuition fees by April 20, 2020 will benefit from this financial assistance package. In addition to other financial assistance they may be receiving already, we are pleased to offer an additional fee reduction of 2,000 AFN for our graduate programs and an additional fee reduction of 1500 AFN for our undergraduate students for each installment paid during the COVID-19 campus closure only.

These fee reduction opportunities will also help students to cover their Internet connectivity costs during their online education program. The mobile top up cards will be discontinued moving forward. Alternatively, students will benefit from fee reduction during the COVID-19 situation as explained earlier.

If a student has already made Spring 2020 payment in March, we will automatically provide them with the financial assistance and will adjust their fees. These changes will be reflected in the student accounts. No application or follow up is necessary.

Chancellor’s Special Financial Assistance Program

The Chancellor’s special financial assistance program is designed for students who continue to have significant socio-economic issues during the COVID-19 situation. Students who have demonstrated financial constraints such as loss of job, limited or no income or fall in the vulnerable category, can submit an online application to the Chancellor’s Special Financial Assistance Program through the Student Portals in LMS. The deadline for application is April 12, 2020. Late applications will not be accepted.

Please note that these changes will become effective Saturday, April 4, 2020.

To receive the University’s financial assistance, students must be full-time and registered for a minimum of 15 credits at undergraduate and 10 credits for graduate programs. Students must also have satisfactory attendance and appropriate disciplinary record during their studies at Kardan University.

The Student Success Center at Kardan University starts offering its services through online platforms.

The Office of Student Involvement and Events forms a Virtual Debate Club through Mixidea, which enables students to learn how to debate, communicate and collaborate. The office will organize online debate competitions among students helping them develop presentation, communication and debating skills.

This office also starts a Virtual Book Club for those who are interested in reading. The club is an excellent platform for reading, talking about what students are reading, and making new friends with other readers.

The Office of Career Services is ready to equip students with competencies valued by employers in the job market. They are now able to have individual career advice, professional CV/Resume and cover letter preparation sessions through Skype, Zoom Meeting or phone.

The Office of Gender and Alumni Relations, will continue to support and advise students as they continue online education. They can check the Alumni Success Story and learn about our amazing alumni contributions. The Gender and Alumni Relations Manager is available online to address any gender related issues or concerns any student might have.

Kardan University’s Leadership Consults Students on Progress and Achievements in Enhancing Online Education

In a recent online meeting, Roeen Rahmani, Kardan University’s Chancellor and the University’s academic leadership including Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Deans, Academic Administrators, and professors initiated a dialogue with the undergraduate and graduate student representatives to discuss progress and achievements on the University’s online education initiatives and future direction.

Make up Exams Postoned

All make up exams are postponed until further notice. Students will be informed as soon as a revised time table is finalized.

Amid the widespread COVID-19 pandemic around the world and in Afghanistan, Kardan University takes all precautionary measures to make sure the safety of staff and faculty members working to facilitate the online education for the students.

Masks are distributed to individuals entering the university premises, alcohol-based hand sanitizers, and temporary hand-wash sinks are installed across campuses. Posters on Disease Control and Prevention, as well as a list of best practices for preventing the spread of Corona Virus, are posted all around to encourage strict adherence to safety guidelines provided by the WHO and the Ministry of Public Health.

Upgrading the Zoom Meeting Software

Kardan University activates the Zoom Meeting Pro facility, which enables the lecturers to have continuous sessions without disconnection after 40 minutes. It also facilitates a higher volume of data sharing by lecturers, allowing students to obtain more materials from the lecturer for a particular session.

Mentors assigned for Newcomers

Dedicated Mentors are assigned to support first semester students. The Mentors will assist the newcomers in using the LMS and Students Portal, as well as setting up and using the online education system. Mentors' contact numbers are available here.

Classes will remain online until further notice

Based on the currently available information, we expect that the COVID-19 situation will continue at least until mid-May. In light of the need for faculty, staff, and students to make plans, we are making the decision now to hold all bachelor’s and master’s classes online until further notice.

Students will need to install the necessary applications to access online classes and other resources. The process is explained on this website under “How to Participate in an Online Class”. Students can also contact their Program Officers to obtain further details.

We are in active discussions with MoHE about further improvement of the whole process.

Services will be reduced

All libraries and labs will be closed, except for faculty and staff who need to use them for teaching online classes. Student activity spaces, like breakout rooms, will be closed.

The Admission Information Offices will remain open to the public at Taimani campus and School of Graduate Studies in Parwan-e-Du for general inquiries.

Cashiers will be present for fee clearance and other relevant services

How is the University keeping students, faculty, and staff informed?

  • Kardan University is communicating regularly with students through email, social media, and this website. Please continue to monitor all communications from the University.
  • This site will continue to be updated with information about university operations, academic instruction, events, and other details.
  • The University will be moving all bachelor’s and master’s classes online. We will have no physical classes until further notice. A reassessment will be done after April 23rd at the earliest and periodically after that date.
