Kardan University’s Department of Political Science & International Relations conducted a debate competition on a “Road to Peace in Afghanistan: Challenges and Opportunities” for its students on July 18, 2021, as part of its commitment to achieving UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions.

Initially, on July 9, 2021, registered students presented their analysis and arguments about the mentioned topic through the Zoom application. Mr. Matiullah Aryanpur, Mr. Sediqullah Sahil, Mr. Mohammad Kawsar Dawlatzai, and Dr. Tufail Ahmad Peerzada were panel members, examining and assessing the participants.

The competition was organized in two languages (Dari & English). Sixteen students participated in the first session, from which only eight were able to qualify for the final round.  Mr. Walid Karyab, Mr. Sabawon Arghandiwal, Mr. Ahmad Sadam Panah, and Mr.Abdullah Shinwari qualified for the final round after presenting their arguments and analysis in the English language. Also, Ms. Rahima, Mr. Shah Massoud, Mr. Gul Wali Hiwadpal, and Mir Nizzamuddin qualified to the final round of the competition after presenting their arguments and analysis in the Dari language.

“This was a good opportunity for our students to practically take part in the debate competitions and express their thoughts and opinions on the challenges and opportunities of peace in Afghanistan, which is quite crucial at the moment,” said Mr. Zahid Jalaly, Academic Administrator for the Department of Political Science & International Relations.

He added, “The goal of our department is not only engaging students within classes but also providing them with the opportunities to participate in the actual co and extra-curricular activities.”

“Such constructive debates would remarkably enhance the students’ analytical capabilities and critical thinking,” said Ahmad Walid Karyab, one of the finalists.
