Mr. Mohammad Shams Formuly, Kardan University's Sustainability Engagement Coordinator, participated in SDSN Afghanistan's Members Consultation Meeting took place virtually on February 25, 2021. In the meeting, representatives from various sectors of society, including higher education, research institutes, and governmental agencies, participated and had an overview of the SDSN Afghanistan's activities and involved in group discussions and presentations on the SDGs to identity existing capacities and areas of cooperation among the SDSN Afghanistan's members and partners to advance SDGs in Afghanistan.
Representatives from the SDSN and SDSN Afghanistan explained SDSN Afghanistan's mission, objectives, and national level SDGs programs and initiatives to undertake across the country, starting SDGs awareness and engagement initiatives, launching the Teach Afghanistan program, and preparing for solutions for sustainable development schemes. They also mentioned that the SDSN Afghanistan's partners and members' collaborations are crucial to implementing all these programs in the country.
In the group discussions, each group discussed their respective organizations' areas of expertise in the SDGs and how they can collaborate to advance SDGs-related programs in Afghanistan. After the discussions, the groups identified some significant challenges facing the SDGs in Afghanistan. They agreed to collaborate with the SDSN Afghanistan to tackle the challenges and achieve the SDGs in Afghanistan. The challenges proposed by the groups range from policy responsiveness and coherence to lack of collaborations for the SDGs and the need for national need assessment to establish baselines for the SDGs in Afghanistan.
