Abstract

A trend of translating legal texts into Pashto is on the rise in Afghanistan. However, the standard of such translations is not up to the mark. Sometimes, a word by word, literal translation is produced, which fails to communicate main concept of the original work, while other times, syntactic and grammatical problems are evident. This paper looks into major reasons for such bad translations, and finds out that translations are mostly done through online platforms or by translators that are not well versed with the original and the target languages. The paper proposes that only legal experts with appropriate writing skills, understanding of the original language and standards of legal translation should undertake legal translations.
